(COUNTING FROM THE FIRST DAY OF L.M.P)
AROUND 1 WEEK AFTER CONCEPTION
Well the time you waited for has come--- the fertilization phase. Hope luckily you are one of them going through it!
What are the changes in growth and development of your fetus?
As a result of the fruitful intercourse the sperms have gained entry into the uterus via vagina ascending to the fallopian tube, the area supposed for the fertilization to occur.
Let’s start thinking that the process of formation of a new life has begun.
The egg released from the ovary, on the other hand, gains its entry into the fallopian tube after it gets grasped by the long finger like fimbria of fallopian tube. Both sperms and the egg meet thus in the fallopian ampulla and only one sperm gets a chance to penetrate the egg and fertilize it. The fertilized egg turns into a zygote. Each sperm and egg has within its centre a genetic information area stored within the chromosomes. Each chromosome carries with it the bits of genetic information that passes on to the next generation. So after the fusion of the egg and sperm the resultant zygote will definitely carry on the chromosomes that will be inherited by the fetus; the baby later on. The information carried on is inherited in terms of the personal appearance, gender, characteristics and so on.
The gender of your baby rests truly and entirely on the dad. The male and female gametes i.e. the sperms and the egg have within them one pair of sex chromosome out of 23 pairs. The female thus has sex chromosome XX and the male has XY. So the mother has natural tendency for female birth only, it solely depends on the father’s sperms now. So whatsoever is the gender of your baby, thanks to the sex chromosome in father’s sperm.
“A CHILD’S SEX OR GENDER IS DETERMINED BY THE SEX CHROMOSOME IN THE FATHER’S SPERM DURING CONCEPTION”
Normally it happens that one egg is fertilized by one sperm only. But sometimes it may turn out that two or more eggs are fertilized by one or more number of sperm---Surprised! It can happen when the twins or triplets or the quadruplets are to get born.
If one sperm fertilizes two ova or eggs, the zygote so formed will develop the monozygotic twins as both will develop within a single zygote.
If two eggs are fertilized differently by two sperms, the resultant zygotes will form dizygotic twins.
The monozygotic twins so conceived will acquire the similar genetic make-up and look alike; have similar characteristics such as gender; looks, etc.
On the other, the dizygotic twins differ in their genetic make-up thus differing in their characteristics.
All we say at this point of time is---“MIRACLE OF LIFE HAS OCCURRED.”
What changes are expected in you, mom?
The ovulation resulted into the egg release and finally the sperm-egg meeting which has led to the conception.
After the conception the implantation is the next step—the implantation of the fertilized egg – ‘GETTING IT EMBEDDED.’
However the process of conception is not an alarming one that would give you some notice.
Mom at this moment you are unaware of the conception; may be you feel potting at he time your blastocyst (the structure yet to develop following the fertilization) is about to get implanted but still not necessarily always!
What’s your role dad---Dad’s support?
May be you are also now expecting your little champ! Is it so Dad? All you can do is to have patience and watch…
